Exploring Bedfordshire's Kilns: An Industry Revealed

In 2025 Albion Archaeology unearthed a remarkably preserved late medieval pottery kiln under the playing field of Sutton V. A. primary school, near Potton in Bedfordshire. Potton and the surrounding area was already a known centre for pottery production and the 30,000 pieces of pottery excavated from the kiln showed that Sutton was part of this substantial industry. This exhibition explores this discovery, alongside other late medieval kilns found nearby and a Roman kiln found in Bedford itself.

Visit the exhibition to see what this kiln looked like, as well as what kind of pottery was being made in Roman and late medieval Bedfordshire. This was a community-wide project and the display includes contributions from Bedford Young Archaeologists’ Club, Sutton V.A. primary school and volunteers from The Higgins Bedford.
